We meet David, the protagonist of Emma Cline's new novel, Switzy, on his final journey. David is battling dementia, and he is on his way to Switzerland to end his life. Cline masterfully inhabits David's disoriented mind in decline; the present moment is a confusion of lost words and names, and the past is a patchwork of fragments that echo across time but cannot be pinned down. The result is dizzying, for the reader as it is for David. In the end, we are moved by the understanding that we know how this will End... life is short and long, full of "many opportunities, many errors," full of regrets and triumphs, a beautiful, divine mess.
